Not many people thought I would attend college. In fact, I was the first person in my family to earn a university degree! I'm sure many of my students here can relate to this. I was born in Uvalde, Texas, a small town near the US/Mexican border. Around the 4th grade, my family decided to move to Montezuma, Kansas, an even smaller town near Dodge City. While I struggled in elementary school in Texas, I excelled in Kansas. Because the classes were small, the teachers knew everyone, and they cared about our performance. After graduating from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, I was hired by Shell Oil Company. My degree in Finance opened many doors. More important, though, I realized that education was the key to my success. I was energized by learning, and my career opportunities improved. Soon I earned an MBA, and later a PhD. Today, I have several master's and two doctorates! Out side of my teaching responsibilities, I serve as an IT consultant to businesses across the United States. In my consulting work, I write extensively on subjects pertaining to Finance, Management, Project Management, Six Sigma, Nonprofit Management, HR, Operations, International Business and Entrepreneurship. Here is something unique about me: I have officiated men's collegiate basketball for more than 20 years, working in conferences such as the Big 12, Mountain West, and WAC. It's a tough business, but it has its rewards.
